Last July of 2023, a fairly new Barcelona-based label called 22 Recordings @22022022vd released their second work, of course in vinyl format. The name of this record is "Capítulo II," and when they proposed me to be a part of it, they explained that from their perspective, all the genres of electronic music that we might consider niche nowadays have so much in common that they were embarking on a crusade to bring together artists from different styles.

They spoke to me about a new wave of New Beat (yes, yes, that late '80s Belgian sound), and they wanted to include it. All of these things seemed fascinating to me, and of course, I always say yes.

"Metal Bones" is one of the most 4x4 tracks I've made recently, and I saw it fitting clearly into this project. This vinyl is already sold out, as is the case with most electro vinyl releases lately, they go quickly, and it's tough to find copies. The Barcelona record label, Electroclub Recordings @electroclub_barcelona , did a titanic compilation work and released IBEX 808 in 2022 (only in digital format). And, of course, Downrocks was also invited to the party, participating with this fast-tempo track with techno tendencies.
But I’m still retaining the funky melodies that characterize me so much.

I am very proud of this electro progressive song, and it's one of those tracks that has gone unnoticed, even to myself.

Dark Vektor @ivan_vektah proposed to many of his friends to be part of this remix project of one of his classics, and as always when I'm offered, I was ready for whatever comes. It was released in December 2016, and the track can be found on digital platforms.

Receiving a call from the talented Robert Cosmic @

Receiving a call from the talented Robert Cosmic @robertcosmic_ is always a pleasant surprise, and I felt joyful when he proposed that I be part of his first vinyl release on the Mars Frequency label @marsfrequencyrecords in 2021. He wanted to give a gift and pay tribute to the 10 years of survival of his project, and I was going to be part of the cake.

Furthermore, he was very specific about the sound he was seeking for that record, a homage to the old, to the cosmic, to that essence of primal electro. I got to work and constructed a song using mostly external instruments for the sounds, without relying on plugins or sample libraries.

A year later, in February 2022, I received a box in the mail containing several copies of the album, a satisfaction that is hard to put into words. Don’t miss out on listening to the work on the label’s Bandcamp page.

This one was the first Downrocks release. Created

This one was the first Downrocks release. Created in 1999 but it wasn’t released until 2006. 500 units made in Germany. Contains remixes from Koa and Moockie, 2 electro heads from the first generation in Barcelona.
When I did this record I had the Sirius synthesizer by Quasimidi as my only vocoder in my studio. It was horrible. No way to make it sound right.
One day I was in Madrid invited at my friend’s house, @alek.stark . He was playing with some new toy at his home studio, the Digitech Talker. Some kind of pedal vocoder that had nice presets and good intelligible sound. We were playing around with strange carriers like looping very tight a snare drum in a sample player and triggering it as notes in a keyboard.
I had my portable minidisc recorded with me (yes, it was 1998) and asked Alek if he would mind me waking up early in the morning to play around with his machines and record some stuff. He said he was cool, of course.
That next morning I woke up really early, put the headphones to avoid making any noises in the house and started to play and write some lyrics. Just with a click for the tempo and improvising melodies, words and sounds...
I recorded a couple of minutes of random things. That 2 minutes vocoder track was the starting point of this record. I created all melodies based on those vocoder notes for the song “Geometria”. Also used some stuff for the “Psiconautas” song.
One year later I found one of those Digitech Talker pedal and bought it. .

The live set around 2010. There is also a couple of racks under de mixer like the #rolandsvc350 classic vocoder.
The idea was not to use a computer for sequencing anything. Laptop was there for #Serato (DJ software used only for scratching in this case). The rest was controlled by the old MPC 1000 and by hand of course.
The #nordmodular (red keyboard) was used in full with its 4 modules and the 4 different outputs. So while some sounds were shot from the #mpc other were played live on the 🎹. I also used all carrier sounds for the vocoders from the same Nord Modular. It’s so powerful.
The other controller keyboard was directly connected to a Roland JV-1010 module which I programmed to create lead and pad synths. Very small but powerful instrument.
I had a lot of fun tweaking the pots in the #davesmithtetra box you can see in the picture, triggered of course from the MPC’s sequences.
And the #yamaha01v mixer it’s maybe not the best choice for sound (digital vs analog dilema) but the fact I didn’t need to touch it at all during the whole hour of show made it a perfect fit. Every song and effect were programmed in the sequence at the MPC so the mixer was just responding to every change. I even programmed parameter effect changes during the song. ...
A lot of work to put everything together but at the end it paid off in flexibility and the possibility of improvising as well as failing during the live shows. .

Downrocks has been around since forever. He started playing with his first machines in the late 80s along with his graffiti and rap colleagues. He is part of the Electronautas collective and has been releasing electro music under the name Downrocks since 2006.
